Grand River Questions
I'm new to the forum... I'm trying to plan out several routes for this spring along the Grand River. The "River Info" tab is GREAT and will be a huge help. Thanks to whoever put that together. I do have one question though. The water level requirements noted in the description... what gauge is that referring to? Grand River at Painesville? That's the only one I can find on that river. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Yep
That is the only gauge. I paddle the grand slot. I have learned if you use 2.5ft as the minimal level you will be ok. If it is 2.5 at gauge take 1ft off that to be close to the hidden valley bridge abutment gauge. Anything lower you will be bumping and grinding and maybe walking Hope this helps Mike

Grand River water levels
Greetings,
There is only one gage. It is located in Painesville at River Mile 8.7 near where SR 84 crosses over the river. [ Google for... USGS 04212100 ] The Grand runs for 102 miles so that gage sometimes needs to be interpreted for conditions further upstream. We don't know what your paddling experience is, but, if you are a new paddler, please consider finding other experienced paddlers that will help you make good decisions. We really hate to read about other paddlers from police reports! This is a bit confusing but so you know... While this forum is the official website for the Trumbull Canoe Trails Club...being a member of the forum is not the same as being an actual dues paying Club member. This is a REAL club with REAL members. See the ABOUT button in the header. Inquiries on this forum tend to get better/more responses if you are a CLUB member. Safe Paddling, KenM |

Upper limit of safe paddling?
American Whitewater gives 2,500 cfs as the upper limit for the Harpersfield dam to Hidden Valley Park stretch of river. This appears to be somewhere between 4.7 and 4.8 ft on the Paineville USGS gage. My guess is that the upper level of safe paddling would be quite a bit lower for novice paddlers. Others on the forum might have some thoughts on this. I don't have enough runs on the river to offer an opinion.

Thanks! I totally understand becoming a member. I'll read about it in the about section.
Little about me: I'm not very experienced. But I'm about to be. I'm training for the Texas Water Safari. 260 mile canoe race in Texas. It's no joke and the training has weekend trips of 20-60miles throughout. Overnighters included. I have a 16' mad river royalex canoe I'll convince someone to join me in each weekend. Of course, safety is first. I won't be paddling in unsafe conditions. If anyone has tips or advice or suggestions on put ins or takeouts I'm all ears. Also, should I be concerned about break-ins at parking lots? |

There is a member of the club, BandanaDan on this board, who has done a lot of canoe racing. You may want to get it touch with him.

whoooooooaa....
Texas Canoe Safari...260 miles... 4 days and 4 hours.
“They don’t call the Texas Water Safari The World’s Toughest Canoe Race’ for nothing. In addition to the length, the challenges include whitewater rapids, multiple portages, and the relentless, soul-sapping Texas heat. Competitors have four days and four hours to paddle from San Marcos, in the center of the state, to the shy little town of Seadrift on the Gulf Coast. There is no prize money for the winners; just Texas-size bragging rights for the finishers.” ----------------------------- Wouldn't this make a fabulous honeymoon for M & J? |
