Avid Akron Area Kayakers seek your Mahoning expertise!
We're thepackardinstitute.com "Misfits," an Akron-based recovery support group that plots epic kayak journeys year-round.
The Mahoning is next up. Looking at July 29 or 30. Newton Falls to Warren (Packard Park). Usually 4 to 7 of us. Fully navigable? Obstructions? Cautions? Recommendations? Thank you, fellow travelers! https://youtu.be/WN55jmaTHbk |

Likely to encounter a number of river-wide strainers between Newton Falls dam and Thomas Swift Metropark. Exactly how many, I don't know. Others in the club may. Starting at Swift Park and going to Packard Park is more likely to not have strainers.
Portage the Leavittsburg Dam at Canoe City Metropark on river left around the electrical station. Go beyond the boat ramp and look for a spot to pull out as river bends left. Class 2 carry. Not entirely sure of upper limits of river level for safe paddling, but there was a Paddle Ohio event last week between Swift and Canoe City that would have cancelled if gage at Leavittsburg had been over 5.5. Seems to always have enough water for paddling thanks to upstream dam release from Lake Milton. Good luck! Last edited by JPTolson; 07-16-2017 at 10:47 PM. |
