FINAL

Call to Order

President Mike Danko called the first meeting of 2014 to order at 5:20 p.m. on January 19, 2014, with 23 members present.

Secretary’s Minutes

Club secretary John Paul Tolson read minutes from the previous club meeting on December 1, 2013. Bob Kolenich moved to accept the minutes. Patty Allen seconded the motion. The members present approved the minutes as read.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer, Patty Allen, reported the club’s year-end financial status with 2013 expenditures of $188.00 and deposits of $673.00. Contact Patty for information on specific dollar amounts of account balances.

Patty also reported that she has received notification from the IRS that the club’s tax-exempt status has been reinstated.

Tim Parkin moved to accept the treasurer’s report; Joel Beeghley seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Old Business

No items of old business were discussed.

New Business

1. Club Officers
Club officers and trustees will be elected at the planning meeting. Any club member who wants to serve as an officer or a trustee can place their name on the list of candidates. Betka Axe has agreed to be a candidate for secretary since current club secretary John Paul Tolson does not wish to run again.

2. Trip Planning Meeting
The trip-planning meeting will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2014, at The Ice House. This year’s schedule will include a maximum of two official club trips/events per month. Exceptions will be made for the months of the Mahoning RiverFest, in which TCT will again participate, and the Mahoning River Clean Up when two trips may be scheduled in addition to these events.

3. Mahoning River
Club president, Mike Danko reported the following:

The City of Lowellville, Ohio, has been using pictures from the club website to bolster its efforts to secure funds from the State of Ohio to remove the dam on the Mahoning River within its jurisdiction.

The State of Ohio turned down the City of Struthers grant application to remove the dam on the Mahoning in its jurisdiction. The $6.5 million estimated cost of removal was too great a percentage of the $10 million available annually statewide for such river restoration projects.

The cities of Canton and Cuyahoga Falls continue to sponsor and support restoration efforts on the Mahoning in order to promote and garner support of future river restoration efforts in their jurisdictions.

John Paul Tolson asked about the recent resignation of the director of the Ohio EPA and whether there should be concern that grant funds earmarked for, but not yet awarded to, the City of Lowellville for dam removal, may be diverted to other priorities once a new director is named. Mike indicated that EPA will review its preliminary decision on the grant funds, and that Lowellville is monitoring the situation closely.

Mike singled out Steve Preston and Linda Kohut in appreciation for their help with the Mahoning River cleanup last year.

4. Announcements

•Complimentary copies of Ohio’s Lake Erie Public Access Guidebook, Rivers Edition are available to club members. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources provided the guide books in appreciation for work done by our club on the Mahoning River Water Trail through Trumbull County. The Mahoning is the only state water trail with mile markers and signs for take outs at this time.

•Club president Mike Danko indicated that he is developing a club roster with members’ contact information.

•Pennsylvania is looking for paddlers from March 1 to March 8 to help with fish stocking in Neshannock Creek. Contact Steve Preston if interested.

Adjournment

At approximately 5:45 p.m. Rich Allen moved that the meeting be adjourned. Tim Parkin seconded the motion and members present approved the motion.

Minutes prepared by club secretary John Paul Tolson on January 23, 2014. Minutes approved by club members present at Trumbull Canoe Trails meeting on February 16, 2014.
