French Creek
French Creek Cancelled
With great sadness I must cancel the French Creek paddle. I need to think of everyone safety. Currently the Creek is at 6.87 ft. at the USGS gauge in Utica. The USGS site now has it marked as a black symbol. On the site that means it is to high. At 6 ft or under I would still paddle it but, that didn't work out. Thank you to all who posted and help make my decision easier Mike Danko Any questions call me at 330-766-3129 Mike Danko Last edited by mfdanko99; 05-06-2017 at 06:46 PM. |

I am in a huge debate if we should paddle tomorrow or not.
The highest tct paddled French creek was 2011. It was at 6ft. My report has it being easy and a nice paddle. As of 11am it is 6.8 ft at Utica. Any feed back from members would greatly be appreciated!!! I am really debating. Tomorrow they are calling 49 and cloudy in Franklin Mike

from Ken
Mike,
You sure do seem to have trouble with French Creek. As you know K&C are a bit more reserved than some of you guys. For us 50 deg and cloudy on a lake is a maybe but 50 deg on a river that's running high is probably not for us. I was hoping to do this trip again but I think we will pass on this one even if it is a smooth paddle. I did this trip 5-3-15 @ 3.2 ft (and warm). The ledge and drop across the river was fun then but I wonder what it might be like at 6+ ft? Could be it just washes out? Hopefully you will hear from some other paddlers. It's always hard to cancel an event especially when it's borderline. If you cancel this you always have the option to re-post it when the water is more favorable. KenM |

Accuweather says upper 40's with wind gusts up to 20mph for Sunday in Franklin. Damp, a bit chilly, and windy....not my idea of a good day to paddle either. There will be other days, it is only the first week of May after all.

Someone posted on the Facebook site Friday that the water was high and moving. At a level of almost 7ft there maybe no lunch spot.
water high with nice weather vs. water high and crappy weather... safety first. |

Right decision
Hi Mike,
We think you made the right decision. There will be other weekends with nicer weather and more favorable paddling conditions. French Creek is a pretty safe paddle but how fun is to load in 30 degree weather, drive up in the rain and then worry about wind and water conditions the whole way. We weren't going to take the chance since we're leaving for Idaho and Wyoming next week. We'll think about you if we get to paddle out there. Mark and Kathy Murtha |
