Trip Report: Grand River 11-16-15
Trip Report: Grand River, Harpersfield Bridge to Hidden Valley Park
The water level this day was at 2.60 ft. Trip was 8.56 miles. The shuttle is about 7 miles and is easy and quick. There is good parking (and restrooms) at both ends. At this level the river was moving from 2 to 3 mph but faster in the channels. There are numerous channels that had some nice waves and a couple of these put a bit of water into my kayak. We were on the river 3-1/2 hours with a long break. Most of the rocks were submerged but I still bumped a few that were just hiding. At this water level you do have to be alert when the river splits into channels because some are too shallow and it's hard to tell until the last second. I managed to get stuck on one gravel bar that I mis-judged. It was a fun paddle. The water was pretty cold now so it's time to think about that again. We had a group of five and one went for a short swim...ambushed by a tricky log! Of course, that was the person that wore the thin nylon pants and the cotton tee and jacket. And no extra clothes. Fortunately it was near the end and with someone else's jacket, they were cold but not in danger. Paddlers take heed! What a glorious day to be on the river. And in November no less. And on what I think is probably the most scenic part of the river. Temp was about 60 degrees with a bright sun. It was chilly in the shadows and warm in the sun. A surprise was that with the sun low in the sky this time of year the river gorge actually had a lot of sunshine streaming into it. The bad news was that there was a terrible glare on the water that made it particularily hard to see and read the river. At one point I was fumbling around trying to find my sunglasses to put on when I realized I already had them on. Ken Mozden 11-18=15 |
